    Description

    This pair of exotic American Cotton Palms (Washingtonia filifera) are located in the public gardens/ lawn area of Glebe Library Gardens adjacent to the Wigram Road frontage. Their canopy and roots are confined to the public reserve. The palms measure approximately, height 10 metres (clear trunk) with canopy spread of 3 metres. They are estimated to have been planted c.1910. The palms are in good condition and health.

    Significance

    This pair of exotic American Cotton Palms (Washingtonia filifera) are visually prominent, formal elements in this streetscape and are representative of late nineteenth century and early twentieth century botanic collections.

    Historical notes

    This pair of exotic American Cotton Palms (Washingtonia filifera) are believed to be remnants from a former large estate and garden. The palms have been retained within a recent park development scheme. This hardy, drought tolerant palm species is somewhat less common than its close relative, the Washington Palm (Washingtonia robusta).
